About Me

My photo
I take pictures of things. Mostly with film. Mostly with cameras. I am an engineer by trade. What really makes me happy, though, is to find an old camera at a swap meet or antique store and bring it back into working order with a few hours at the workbench. I then like to take them out and shoot some film. This blog is in large part the result of that activity.

nikon porn

Nikon F early 1960's

This is what they call 'camera porn'.  In this case, it is specifically Nikon Porn.  More specifically that is a Nikon F, from sometime in the early 1960's.  It is not new, it is hardly pristine.  It is a hodge podge of parts that I found and bought and assembled and made to work.

From time to time I like to take a photo of one of my cameras.  From time to time I'll post them here.  I probably shouldn't make it my first post, but there it is.  I think it helps to explain a lot.

I don't love my cameras (I reserve love for people and the occasional animal) but I really like them and they make me happy.  They are very tactile.  I like to hold them and wind them and listen to the shutter.  I like to fix them.  To buy a broken camera and spend a few hours at the workbench making it work again brings me great joy.  As I work I think about the people that built this camera, the person who brought it home shiny and new, the other hands that have held it, the photos of families and vacations and weddings that were taken with it.   Lives have been recorded with this device, and for some reason it has ended up with me, and I don't want its journey to end.  I don't want it to end up trash.  I want to keep it working and document my life, my children's lives, with it.  I want it to live on.

From time to time I'll share one of them.
